Mandy Monroe: Story & Interview

Mandy was born on May 19th, 1988, in Toronto, Ontario to a Russian/Romanian/Jewish mother, and a Chinese/Japanese/Native father. She was an individual since the day she was born and was more like a little adult than a child. Mandy’s mother tried to put her into acting/modeling schools, but believe it or not, she was just too shy! She also attempted to put Mandy in art school because she started drawing at the age of 2 and her talents were beyond a normal child’s artistic strengths!

Having such an exotic look, Mandy always got attention wherever she went, and she loved it. Around the age of 4 is when she started talking about being in magazines and on TV when she grew up. During school years she also wanted to be a veterinarian because of her extreme love for animals.

In school, Mandy was a straight-A student and absolutely loved learning. She was also what you could call a “beautiful bully.” She had her moments but had protected quite a few people from real bullies, she’s always been the protective type. If anyone from elementary or junior high school were asked what they remembered her for, it would probably be her crazy laugh, and her out of this world shoes, you couldn’t miss her.

When Mandy was 16, she applied online to Model Search Canada, and they loved her! She was instantly chosen for a bridal magazine editorial, and about a year later she landed her first magazine spread in a Spanish magazine called Opinion. After that, Mandy built her own empire, using MySpace and then Facebook as her tools. At the age of 18, Mandy took a much-needed hiatus and was back on the scene by 22. She started doing car shows like Importfest, and Performance World, and motorcycle shows like The International Super Show, National Motorcycle Show, World of Motorcycles, and The Spring Motorcycle Show. She also started doing countless online magazine features, and music videos. In 2010, she was chosen to be a part of the Playboy Golf Tournament in Toronto. In 2012 Mandy landed 2 major magazine features, in April, she landed a 4 page spread in Urban Ink Magazine and landed the cover of The Horse Backstreet Choppers Magazine in October, as well as 2 major calendars in 2013 that include Auto Body Hotties and Asian Mystique which are sold worldwide in all Calendar Club stores.

Describe yourself in three words. Unique, honest, loyal.

How would you describe your personality? I am a really down-to-earth Taurus, I appreciate the little things in life. I am as honest as it gets and as loyal as it gets. I have often been told that I am an old soul, and I can say the same for myself. I feel like I have lived double the years that I have.

How would you describe your professional interests? I am currently in school to become a child and youth worker, for those that have not heard that term, it is basically a social worker for children. I love criminology, I would have dabbled in this if I hadn’t started the whole college thing at such a late age.

Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in this Career? I have been a model for over a decade, it’s always been a passion and hobby of mine. I always knew I had a unique look, and I thought I should utilize it. Modeling has opened a lot of doors for me in all areas of life and has taught me a lot. I don’t see it as an end career though, a smart girl will never make her career goal to be a model because 9 times out of 10 it won’t happen. You always need a backup plan.

What languages do you speak? English, Russian, and I understand some Serbian and French.

What’s your background in modeling? I started at 14 years old and built my own empire all on my own. I’ve done a lot, magazines/covers, calendars, music videos, TV.

If you could change three things about yourself, what would they be? I am very jealous of my significant other whomever it may be, that’s not good quality so I’d change that. I would change my natural hair color to blonde and change my eyes to blue!

Who are some of your favorite models and designers? Jessica Burciaga is ONE of my favorite models, she is just perfect. I have a shoe obsession so it would have to be a shoe designer, and that’s Christian Louboutin.

How would you describe your style? Consider anything and everything from color to historical eras and more. I am a total 1980s dresser, with a hint of punk. I know people see me as this glamorous, fancy, girly dresser, but that’s just for photo shoots and shows as a model. The real me is very laid back on a day-to-day basis, but if I’m going out, which is like never, I dress very flashy, you will notice me from a mile away.

What are your strengths? And what are your weaknesses? My strengths are being blunt/honest, and passionate. My weakness is animals and children, the 2 most innocent creatures in this world.

Where do you generally shop? I don’t have particular places that I shop, I will usually go into a mall and go to almost every store and whatever I like I will get. I am also an online shopping junkie, the best stuff is never in the store.

What other modeling projects have you done? Some of my favorite projects are the cover of The Horse Backstreet Choppers magazine, my 4-page-spread in Urban Ink Magazine, and the various calendars I’ve done, including my very own for 3 years in a row now.

How would you describe working with the photographer? If you don’t get along, the shoot will probably end up like crap. I am serious about my work, and I am not one to mess around with, so “photographers” that are in the game for ulterior motives will not have a fun time working with me, because I will put them in their place.

Do you do your own hair and make-up? I do. Nobody knows my face and hair better than me, so I know how to get it done. I have always done my own hair and make-up.

What are some of the main differences between runway and photographic modeling? Runway models are clothing racks, they are used for their bones to hang the designer’s clothes on. Photographic modeling is creating a beautiful picture with your natural accentuates.

What’s your favorite outfit from your own closet? Oh, I couldn’t answer that, I have way too many things in my closet that I adore.

Describe the atmosphere when you’re on a shoot? If there is no music, there is no atmosphere.

Why would you think you’re fit for being a model? Because I am so different ethnically, and I am very diverse, I can look like a girl, a boy, I can look like I’m Spanish, Hawaiian, Asian, Mixed, anything.

Do you have any limitations? Would you model any kind of clothing at all? I do model clothing, I love modeling clothing, I think my only limitation would be for a fur company.

Describe the ideal work environment for you. Positive people! Positive energy really sets the atmosphere wherever you are.

What are your likes and dislikes? I like good people, truly good people with good souls. I dislike liars and cheaters, and dishonest people that do disgusting things to get to the top.
